The Japanese history of the cast iron teapot
The cast iron teapot has a long and rich history in Japan. The first cast iron teapots were made there in the 16th century, during the development of the Japanese tea ceremony. This special teapot, also known as a tetsubin, became an important part of the ceremony.
Tetsubins are handmade by pouring molten iron into molds. The molds are made of clay for the highest quality teapots, or of sand for mass production. It is essential that tetsubins are made from iron, as this results in a softer, even sweeter taste for the water.

Features of a Bredemeijer® cast iron teapot
All of our cast iron teapots are made from high-quality materials, ensuring they last long with daily use.
The benefits of a Bredemeijer® cast iron teapot include:
- High-quality, durable cast iron that keeps tea warm longer.
- An enameled interior that does not affect the taste of the tea.
- A specially designed spout for drip-free pouring.
- A fine-mesh stainless steel tea filter included.
Like ceramic teapots, cast iron teapots are made from a strong material that lasts. They are also highly heat-resistant, allowing them to retain heat, keeping your tea warm for longer periods.
Cast iron is a natural material that does not release chemicals into the tea, making it suitable for all types of tea, including delicate ones like green tea, which is sensitive to oxidation.

Maintaining your cast iron teapot
After use, rinse your Bredemeijer® cast iron teapot with warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. Store the teapot without the lid to prevent rusting. You can place a paper towel between the lid and the teapot to absorb any moisture. Over time, the enamel interior of the teapot may turn dark brown. Avoid sudden temperature changes, and never drop the teapot, as this could cause the enamel to crack.
Never clean a cast iron teapot in the dishwasher, as this can cause rust. Before using the teapot for the first time, thoroughly wash the interior with water and dish soap, and dry the teapot with a clean, dry cloth.
