Drink green with sustainable tea!

Worldwide we drink almost 3 cups of tea per day. It is often assumed that every type of tea is sustainable because it’s a biological product, but often we don’t know where the tea is made. Not every tea is sustainably produced! In this blog we’ll tell you exactly what sustainable tea is and we’ll give you some tips for easy swaps at home!

The impact on the environment

Tea is mainly produced in Asia and Africa. The hot, humid and high altitude regions provide the perfect conditions for a tea plantation. The biodiversity in these areas is still high. However, this is endangered by the construction of tea plantations. Sustainable tea plantations compensate this by planting trees themselves in order to maintain the biodiversity.

Working conditions

The tea plantations provide jobs for a lot of workers from the regions because the production of tea has a very labour-intensive cultivation. Namely, because the tea is plucked and processed by hand. When tea is sustainably produced the labourers are paid fair wages and work in good working conditions. In addition, they aren’t exposed to dangers pesticides!

Quality mark

Nowadays, several products have a quality mark which ensures that the product is produced with attention to the working conditions of the labourers, the impact on the environment and fair trade. You can find the quality mark on the packaging of the product. So look closely when buying tea in a store!
